In amateur basketball, court sizes vary widely. Also for recreational purposes, the court size can vary according to your own pleasure or to the available area. Here, we will talk about different basketball court dimensions.
Basketball Court Dimensions in NBA and FIBA
FIBA is the association that governs basketball worldwide while NBA is the basketball association of the U.S. NBA basketball court dimensions and FIBA have different court dimensions but in the Olympics, FIBA regulations are effective.
Court length in NBA is 94 ft which equals in metric, 28,65m. In FIBA it is 28m (91,86ft)which is shorter by about 2 ft or 0,65m.
Court width in NBA is 50 ft which equals in metric, 15,24m. In FIBA it is 15m (49,21ft) which is shorter by 0,24m, about less than 1 ft.
One dimension that NBA and FIBA both agree on is the height of the rim which is 10ft equals 3,05m.
Basketball courts have a three-point arc at both rims. If you score a basket from behind this arc it is worth three points. If you score within this line, or with a player’s foot touching the line, it is worth 2 points. In NBA, the three-point line is 23,75 ft (7,24m) away from the basket but it is shorter in the corners it is 22ft (6,7m). But in FIBA it is about half a meter shorter in the center which is 6,75m. In the corner, it is 6,6m, quite the same as the NBA.
There is also a free-throw line which is 15 ft (4,57m) from the plane of the backboard in the NBA. In FIBA it is just 9 cm longer which equals 4,6m. Whenever one player fouls another player then free-throw shots are rewarded. The player stands in this line and shoots freely to the rim. A foul shot is worth 1 point.
In the center, there is a circle that is 12 ft (3,66m) in diameter in NBA, and only 6 cm smaller in FIBA, 3,6m in diameter.
Size Of The Backboard and Ball
Both FIBA and NBA agree on the size of the backboard. The backboard is the vertical board on which the hoop is attached. It is 6 ft (183cm) wide and 3,5ft (107cm) tall. Basketball rims or hoops are 18 inches which equal 46cm in diameter.
A basketball is a spherical ball to play basketball games. The official size is 75 cm (29,5inches) in circumference, in men’s competition. The weight is 22oz, which equals 620g. The size of basketball changes in women and youth competitions. Except for the official sizes, there are many forms of basketball used recreationally.
